Papermoon Diner

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend. I know that I did; I had so much to eat! This was my second vegan Thanksgiving, and it was delicious. Obviously, turkey is the centerpiece of the day, but there exist so many recipes for vegan versions of traditional meals so that you can enjoy the comfort of the holiday dishes while eating what’s comfortable to you. My sister and I shared a Tofurky this year (I realize that it’s not for everyone, but I like it!) and I cooked my own batch of stuffing and a good pumpkin bread. Last year, my friends and I made a vegan pumpkin pie. I’m a huge fan of cooking and baking, so find the ovens or stovetops in your apartments or community rooms on your floor and make a recipe with friends!

Two weeks ago I did a piece on One World Café, an almost entirely vegetarian restaurant by the Hopkins University campus. Now, I’d like to talk about another eatery that has great food (and lots of veg options too!) and that serves as a perfect visual representation of Baltimore: Papermoon Diner located at 227 W. 29th Street. It’s open almost all of the time, so it’s a great place to go after concerts or late movies. They serve delicious breakfast meals, sandwiches, wraps, and specialty items around the clock so you can always get whatever you want.

I got the vegan nachos (which is just too huge for one person to eat, by the way) and a side of home fries.

My sister, Athena, ordered the Crabbi Patti, which is not only a good Spongebob reference, but also looks really tasty!

Conor ordered a grilled cheese and ham, something that he rarely passes up since Papermoon was voted as having the best grilled cheese in Baltimore by the Baltimore City Paper.

The clever titles have Baltimore flare, something that works perfectly with the eclectic and colorful decorations. It’s reasonably priced and totally worth it, at least for the experience. Make a point to go there with your friends, especially if you’re not from around Baltimore. Google Maps has a great feature that finds the MTA bus route to your destination.

So make the trip and let me know how it goes!

Not only is the food amazing, but the atmosphere is also great, and the decor is rather eccentric. This one has eaten there many times and has enjoyed each one.

Oh Stefanie, you forgot to talk about arguably the best, and easily most recognizable part of the Papermoon: the wall ‘decorations’. The place looks like it hired an interior designer who was plucked right out of an early 90′s acid party. The walls are littered with sculptures and creations made up mainly of pieces plucked from the toys of your childhood, and each room seems to have a different style. The main bar area is filled with every miniature figurine you’ve ever heard of, and then some more, while the primary dining area looks like it has a toy train made up of your most disjointed dreams working its way across the ceiling. Then of course, there’s the overflow dining area, which was just opened in the last year; this area is still a work in progress, but its collection of art and light fixtures made up of baby-doll parts is steadily growing. And of course there are the menus, which you just have to see to understand. This really is a restaurant you have to visit several times to really get the full experience. I’m a UMBC alum who moved nearby after graduation, and I visit the Papermoon Diner every chance I get. Its an amazing, whimsical place.

Haha, you’re totally right. I included a few more photos in my blog submission, some of which you can view here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stefaniemavronis/. I go there as much as I can, but you’re right – it’s really a place you have to experience.

One night a few “experimental” folks came in to the moon..it was absolutley HILARIOUS to watch them literally tripping off the decor!! Interseting is a huge understatement in attempts to describe the ambiance. It’s alot for the sober mind to absorb, I can’t imagine what it would be like otherwise!

I go there all the time over the summer [:
They’ve got arguably the best turkey cranberry melt, and I’ve seen my fair share. Not to mention the decorations really are a trip. Just don’t be afraid of dolls.

So nice to see sum fellow retrievers have ventured out to my neck of the woods. I live 1 block from the papermon diner and frequent them often. Living in the shadow of Hopkins U leaves me feeling like a lonley dog sumtimes so it’d be great 2 see a few more UMBC hoodies at the moon!
