Food and Relationships

Eating and going to school have one big thing in common- many people do it together. I have been thinking about the previous times I have written for UMBC Eats, and I realized that a lot of the time, I write about how I am eating with other people or experience my friends have shared with me. Food and eating are part of the relationships that we make at college and in life, in general.

Why do students attend campus events? Often times, the answer is the free food. Now, because of the food, students can meet new people. My sorority often has food at events to help enhance the new friendships with the campus community and with each other.

Also, if my room mate is sad or grumpy, one of the first things I ask her is if she has eaten today. Hunger makes a lot of people grumpy, and understanding this can enhance many friendships. You could be the friend that gives other people food, a.k.a the friend everyone loves. In my apartment, we try to always have a bowel of candy out on te table, and this is very well received by visitors.

Honestly, sharing of food experiences really does tie me and my friends together. One of the musical groups on campus goes to Applebee’s, every Wednesday night. It is a big group experience that has made me feel a lot closer to band kids, which is something I really appreciate.

Food can be an easily overlooked as a part of relationships, but really it can help hold bonds together and create new ones.
