Cactus Silvestre: Fresh Tex Mex

September 20, 2012

Fresh Tex Mex

5315 East Drive, Halethorpe, MD 21227

(410) 242 – 4840

First Impressions:

I wasn’t looking forward to checking this one out – Fresh Tex Mex has no website.  The only reason I know this place exists is due to an obscure post that hinted at a dollar taco night.  So, one Tuesday, me along with a couple of friends made the 5-minute drive from campus to downtown Halethorpe and began looking for the mysterious restaurant.  I initially drove past it, due to how tiny the actual place is.  Once we found the restaurant, my friends wanted to bail and find someplace else, because the place isn’t very welcoming from the outside.  However, I was already set on checking this eatery out, and I wouldn’t take no for an answer.

If you manage to get inside, you’ll find a cozy little space made up of 80% kitchen and 20% dining area.  Upon entering you immediately realize that it’s a mom and pop joint, which is a really big plus for me when it comes to restaurants.  The place was clean and you get a really friendly vibe as soon as you walk through the door.  Be warned though – Taco Silvestre doesn’t have AC.  If you plan on going in the summer, be prepared to sweat out about half of your meal.

Left: Beef Tacos (hard shell) Right: Chicken Tacos (soft shell)

The Food:

Every Tuesday is dollar taco night.  You are given the choice between chicken and beef (hard shell or soft shell).  I’ve ordered both the chicken and beef, and can say with conviction that both are delicious.  It’s worth noting that for a dollar, you get a decent amount of meat in each taco.  On average, I only have to order five tacos in order to be pleasantly full.  Each set of tacos comes with a side of salsa, which is pretty spicy, so be careful the first time you try it.  For dessert, we discovered they offer fresh, made-to-order churros for 99 cents a piece.  Nothing beats the taste of a fresh churro, and for 99 cents, it’s a reasonable addition to your bill.

Made fresh to order!

Will I Go Back?:

I already have! Being so close to UMBC, in addition to having such a great deal on Tuesdays makes Taco Silvestre’s a no brainer for the starving college student who’s low on funds.  Also, did I mention that they offer free delivery to UMBC and the surrounding area?  Check out Taco Silvestre – you won’t be disappointed.

Thanks for this post. I ate from here a lot too when the summer break arrived and I had to move out of campus but live close to school.
